Endoscopic Balloon Tuboplasty in Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of endoscopic balloon tuboplasty in patients with Eustachian tube dysfunction.


Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted including patients diagnosed with Eustachian tube dysfunction who underwent endoscopic balloon tuboplasty. Demographic characteristics, associated symptoms, complementary tests, surgical technique, and postoperative outcomes were analyzed. The main outcome was clinical improvement of symptoms and resolution of dysfunction during follow-up.


Results: A total of 65 patients were included in the study, with 97 Eustachian tubes treated. The revision tuboplasty rate was 10.7% (7/65). Regarding postoperative follow-up, 70% and 78.46% of the 65 patients presented with normal otoscopy and tympanogram findings, respectively. In 46.15% (n=30) of patients, the ETDQ-7 score was less than 2.1 (p < 0.00001). At 12 months of postoperative follow-up, patient satisfaction with the outcome of tuboplasty was 83.08% (n=54).


Conclusions: Endoscopic balloon tuboplasty is a safe and effective technique for the management of Eustachian tube dysfunction, showing significant symptomatic improvement and a low rate of complications in the studied cohort.
